Official Opening of new Village Hall

Official Opening of new Village Hall

The newly built Village Hall at Thakeham was officially opened on Friday 8 March by Nick Herbert, MP, and Peter Burgess, Chair of Horsham District Council.

Mike Lenton of Oakford Homes oversaw the construction of the project which is set on the new Abingworth Meadows development and creates a focal point for the village of Thakeham.

John Bearman, Chairman of the Village Hall Trust, introduced the proceedings and joined Thakeham Morris dancers who then performed the ‘Abingworth’ and ‘Thakeham Oak’ dances.

Following a short announcement from Peter Burgess that the development had been put forward by Horsham District Council to the Royal Town Planning Awards and has been shortlisted in the national competition, Nick Herbert then cut the ribbon to declare the hall officially open.

“The new village hall is incredibly impressive and very grand for this growing community,” said Nick Herbert, who held his afternoon surgery at the new hall. “This demonstrates that with new homes, you can get back great community benefits in return. The new hall gives the village a centre and I hope it becomes the centre of village life.

“More and more people and groups will want to come in once they see the new facilities here. Thank you to the community in Thakeham, the developer in providing the hall, the council and above all, the local people running it, volunteers who put in the time and effort to make it a great success.”

The main hall in the new Thakeham Village Hall has double height windows, an apex roof and has space for a badminton court, making it an excellent venue for large groups. There is also a large meeting room, well-appointed kitchen, accessible WC facilities, two baby changing areas and an outside patio which overlooks the new sports pitches. Free WiFi and a large free car park completes the set up which is already proving popular with Thakeham residents.

Coralie Thomas of Oakford Homes, said, “At Abingworth Meadows we’ve worked closely with the planners at Horsham and with the Parish Council to create new homes to be proud of and to build a new community hub for the entire village. A central part of that is the new Village Hall and the outdoor sports facilities here. We’re very proud of the results and hope that local residents from throughout Thakeham will make full use of the hall and enjoy a welcoming, thriving community.”

The new hall can be booked for groups, clubs, celebrations, parties and business meetings and already has a growing calendar of weekly events for all ages.
