It’s never too late to find your perfect home, as Carla Watt discovered just days before she was due to exchange contracts on a new home in Maidenhead. As soon as she visited Fabric, the landmark development from award-winning housebuilder, Oakford Homes, her decision was easy.
Carla had been relocating from Lincoln following a job offer in London. She’d sold her house and was renting while looking to buy her permanent home. “I’d looked all over Surrey before coming to Maidenhead,” Carla recalls. “I wasn’t 100% happy with the apartment I’d found but I needed somewhere to live so I signed the contract ready for exchange. But when I questioned their parking arrangements, I was disappointed to learn that the parking spaces weren’t allocated so it was a bit of a free for all.”
So Carla went on Rightmove where she found the details of Fabric, a unique collection of 1 & 2 bedroom apartments set within six contemporary buildings. Constructed and crafted by Oakford Homes, the apartments at Fabric present a high-quality design and finish.
Importantly, each apartment at Fabric comes with its own allocated parking space, and even has the added option of an electric car charging point.
The following day Carla visited Fabric’s show home and was immediately impressed.
“Instantly I liked the appearance and design of the development with its red brick architecture which was more my style,” said Carla. “It felt light and airy, and I thought it was also better value for money. I then met Jacqueline in the sales office who was absolutely lovely, not pushy, just really friendly. When we walked into this apartment, I knew immediately that it was ‘the one’. I’m a bit of a fatalist and this was everything I wanted and at the right price.”
Carla reserved her chosen home and withdrew from her initial purchase, which came as a great relief. She was then smoothly guided through the purchasing process at Fabric by Jacqueline and her colleague, Jackie.
Having bought new homes previously, Carla was impressed by the specification and finish at Fabric. “I liked the kitchen design and the fact that the appliances were included. They’re all really good quality Smeg appliances. There’s underfloor heating all through and it’s lovely to be able to walk around feel the warmth under your feet. It does feel like a luxury.”
Carla chose an apartment with two bedrooms, both of which are generous enough for a double bed with plenty of space to spare.
“All the rooms are much bigger than any other apartments I’d looked at before I found Fabric,” said Carla. “It's very, very spacious here. Even in the hallway, the space isn’t tight so it feels like a proper hallway rather than a narrow strip to walk through. They haven’t skimped on the balcony either so I'm looking forward to sitting outside in summertime to enjoy a glass of wine.”
Oakford Homes pulled out all the stops to make sure her apartment would be ready in time for when Carla had to move out of her rented accommodation. “They were so lovely,” she said. “Even the assistant site manager, Dave, helped me unload my car on completion day. Everyone’s been so helpful, and then you get a welcome hamper as well. It’s all just been so smooth.”
Each apartment is finished to the high standards for which Oakford Homes has become known, with prices starting from £295,000 for a spacious 1 bedroom home while 2 bedroom apartments are available from £375,000.

Carla’s still getting to know the location on the fringes of the town. Located on the site of the former Maidenhead District Laundry Co. Ltd., Fabric offers easy links both to the heart of Maidenhead and the surrounding countryside for the perfect balance.
“There’s an amazing little café nearby and a small Tesco which is handy if I’m back late from travelling,” she said. “I also like the fact that I can be on the M40 very quickly and the new Elizabeth Line takes me straight into Paddington.
“With a new build, you've got the peace of mind of a 10-year guarantee,” Carla adds. “But one thing I haven't had before moving to Fabric, is genuine customer service. I’ve been very impressed with Oakford Homes. If I asked a question they always came back to me and their communication works really well. Both Jackie and Jacqueline just made it all so easy. It feels very welcoming here.”
